Poppy – 3.14
New single from Poppy. Kinda industrial. Named after her cat, Pi (Geddit?)
(not on Spotify!)
Duran Duran – Electric Barbarella
I grew up listening to Duran Duran from an early age and they are great but from the middle of the nineties onwards they never really hit the heights of the eighties. They still made a few standouts though like Electric Barbarella which really is a massive in joke. Duran Duran is a character in the 1960’s sex’n’sci-fi romp called Barbarella which is where they got their name.
(If you haven’t seen Barbarella it’s well worth checking out. Cheesy but cool and Jane Fonda is in full sex kitten mode)
Softcult – Gaslight
New single from Softcult too! This sounds a lot like Beabadoobee and the whole shoe gaze / dream pop revival and that is no bad thing because I love that kind of music. They are certainly showing their versatility as most of the songs they have released so far tend to sound pretty different. They are a great band and certainly one to watch out for.
They also make alternative rock like this
Status Quo – Pictures Of Matchstick Men
Ok, an oldie next. I fucking love this track. I can remember hearing it when I was very young but it wasn’t until I was an adult that I found out it was by The Quo! I can remember thinking they were a bit of joke in the 80’s and early 90’s with their pub rock songs (shows how dumb I was).
I love lots of things about this song. The psychedelia, the riffs, the drumming, vocals and lyrics. Its just really cool.
Pink Pantheress – Reason
I only found out about Pink Pantheress a couple of weeks ago and I bought her album almost instantly (yeah I’m real old skool innit). It’s one of the shortest full albums I’ve ever listened to but at the same time I can’t imagine it would be any better if it was extended. It’s that good. She makes UK Garage that is really well put together and sampled and has a great voice.
This particular track stood out to me. It’s got a great drum and bass beat, some nice ambient sounds and her lyrics dancing over the top.
